International Business Machines Corp. (IBM), the largest computer services provider, has bolstered its social networking tool for companies by integrating e-mail and adding a news feed with Twitter Inc. and Facebook Inc. (FB)
The enhanced product, called Connections, enables streaming from social networks alongside business capabilities, such as document authorization, reporting expenses and reviewing e- mails, IBM said in a statement today. The Armonk, New York-based company is also adding more tools to the mobile version of the service, including location tracking, said Alistair Rennie, general manager of social business.
Amid all the talk about the social enterprise and acquisitions in the space, IBM is often overlooked. The reality is that IBM and its Connections software, which launched in 2007, is the leader in the market, according to IDC.
Given the IDC data, it’s worth catching up with IBM’s Jeff Schick, vice president of social software. In between working with the likes of PepsiCo, TD Bank and a bevy of others, Schick also pops up on the Howard Stern radio show on Sirius.
Sit down long enough, or better said, get Sandy Carter, vice president of social business sales at IBM, to stay in one place long enough and you’ll start to hear story after story about how companies are realizing ROI from social business.
IBM’s social networking platform is IBM Connections, which the company said is used by one-third of Fortune 100 companies, including eight of the top 10 retailers and banks. IBM said Connections is unique in that it combines social networking functions with analytics, which help to capture information and create insights into dialogs.
